According to statistics, a car is stolen in the United States about every 24 seconds. And, amazingly enough, all of the top ten cities for car theft are west of the Mississippi.

San Diego was #8 on the list in 2005.

Why am I telling you all of this? Because I was one of those lucky bastards to win the 25 second lottery some time late last night or early this morning.

You never think it's going to happen to you. Amy got off late from work last night, so I came over to make dinner with her and hang out, maybe watch a movie, and call it an early night. Typical stuff- she's got to be up early for work, and I've got to run a couple of early- morning errands over at Naval Base Point Loma. We both got up early, got dressed and ready to go, and I walked up the hill to the church parking lot that most of her apartment complex parks in (best benefit of Mission Valley: a parking space is as precious as Uranium, and just as hard to find most of the time), and there was her roommate's car where she'd parked next to me, but no Suzie.

Of course, my first thought was, "fucking Western Towning!" After all, they towed my 'Lude back in March for "parking in an unassigned space" (translation: the wanted to make an easy buck), and although they gave me my money back when I threatened to take them to Small Claims Court and file (one of many) complaints against them with the Better Business Bureau, maybe they'd forgotten me and how much of a pain in the ass I'd been.

Nope. They haven't towed a single Honda Prelude this week. A quick call to the San Diego PD confirmed that she's not in Impound, and the operator left me with the reassurance that sometimes "it takes a few hours" for all the towing companies to make their reports.

Half an hour later, I'd called every towing company I could find in the phone book that says they do private impounds. No luck. I called the San Diego Police Department back, and filed a stolen vehicle report. Not the ball's in their court, but with Mexico only being a few miles away, I doubt they'll find her any time soon.

Now here's the best part: I left Pensacola last week and got back in town here Sunday night. I unloaded my car first thing, and most everything is at my place, but since I was going to run over to Point Loma first thing this morning to drop off my service record at the PSD (Personnel Support Detachment- think HR Department for you corporate types), I had my record in my trunk.

My entire service record. Everything that I've done, every award, evaluation, fitness report, everything over the last 6 1/2 years.

OK, so I'm going to go call the insurance company back, and one of Amy's roommates is about to give me a ride home, but I'm going to put this out there before I go.

If any of you in the San Diego area see a San Marino Red 2000 Honda Prelude (the last body style they made, with the buggy eyed headlights), with a dent in the driver's- side door and California tag 5MYR180, call the San Diego Police Department IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!

Oh, and if you can, get a hold of the asshole driving it and beat the shit out of them.
