Amy and I flew back into town yesterday morning after spending the weekend in Sacramento. I had a really good time- unfortunately I didn't get to meet her brothers, but I got to spend a lot of time with her mom and some of her friends. I was really surprised by Sacramento- I guess I'd made the assumption that all of California was just palm trees and beaches, and being in a city that had actual seasons, and real trees with REAL leaves, was a refreshing change of scenery. I know Amy's not that fond of her hometown, but I didn't think it was all that bad, really. And her mom, while a bit much, is fun to hang out with.

Friday night after I got up there and got settled, Melinda called and took us out to downtown Fulsom, where we shot pool and had a couple of drinks for a few hours before calling it a night around midnight. Before I'd gone up for the weekend, Amy had had a talk with her mom, and aparently she was a bit hesitant about us sleeping in the same room, which I could understand. But, by the time, I got there, with everybody else gone with the exception of the 3 of us, the only room that was set up when I arrive was Amy's bedroom. Hmmmm....still had to be on good behavior. After we got home I was starting to get ready to turn in for the night when Amy came out of the bathroom wearing only her bikini and a smile.

"You know, my mom has a hot tub in the backyard, and I started it warming up before we had dinner..." She shot me a mischievious look over her shoulder as she walked out the door onto the patio.

We stayed up for a while playing in the hot tub, while trying to be careful not to be too loud- to be honest, it was fun- kind of like being back in high school, sneaking around behind mom and dad's back. We finally called it a night and crawled into bed.

The next day one of Amy's mom's best friends, Zoe, came over to recieve a massage from Amy and to spend the day with us- it was obvious that Zoe considered Amy like a daughter of her own, and she took a liking to me immediately. We chatted for a while as Amy gave her mom a massage, then headed out to where we had reservations for brunch at The Rainbow Lodge in the mountains about an hour outside of Sacramento- there was a light snow on the ground, and the weather was cold and clear as we drove up into the hills. Amy reminded me once again that her mom only lives about 2 hours from Lake Tahoe, and that we have pretty much an open invitation any time we want to come up and go skiing.

The ladies peppered me with questions as we had our brunch, and apparently when I went up to get to the bathroom, the teased Amy about how she'd gotten so lucky as to find me- she told me about that in the car on the ride back to Sacramento. All in all, it was a good time, and we continued talking over a few hands of Persian Rummy before Zoe headed home. Before she left, she turned to Amy and me.

"Amy, I'm so happy for you! Well, for both of you, I mean..." She looked me in the eye. "It's always been my dream to have a son who could marry Amy, but I never had a son...so, could I just adopt you, and then when you marry her..." she was interrupted by Amy's mom clearing her throat loudly.

"Zoe, easy now! Amy's still in school, and Ted still has a few years left before he's out of the military, after all." She winked at me, and with a chuckle, I glanced over at Amy, who was beet red. I smiled politely, trying to avoid laughing a bit harder, especially considering the conversation Amy and I had had a few days before. But, this isn't quite the time to talk about that here yet...

We spent most of the day yesterday unwinding, unpacking, and relaxing before I took her out for dinner at Cafe Sevilla Downtown. I've always had a weakness for the place, and I'm having fun expanding Amy's palette and showing her my favorite spots in town. She fell in love with the place, I think- I'll have to take her back sometime for Brazillian night- she's already told me that we're going to Brazil sometime in the future...the pictures I took there last summer have her totally enchanted. After dinner, we met up with Zeke and Eric at Henry's for a couple of drinks, and to sing some karaoke. We had a good time hanging out, and I was more than amused watching most of the girls at the bar oogling Eric, as usual. After singing a few songs, we all called it a night and headed home for the night, and duty today.

Ugh...and here I am, stuck on the ship with only another week before we head back out to sea again. Thankfully, there won't be too many more instances like this. On another note, word about me bringing Amy home with me in the spring has spread around the family amazingly fast- when I called everybody on Thanksgiving, I was getting peppered with questions a mile a minute from each and every one of the aunts and uncles...and most everybody is planning on heading to New York while I'm supposed to be up there. Interesting.
